As parents, we never want to hear our preschooler express negative thoughts. However, it is natural, and science tells us humans are prone to dwell on negatives. In a world full of negativity, let’s help our preschooler develop a positive thinking!
Reminders
Place affirming reminders around your house or child’s room. You could make or buy a sign that says, “I am enough” or “You are loved.” These affirmations will serve as reminders to your child and will become engrained in them. Instead of a sign, you could leave sweet reminder notes around the house or in their lunchboxes to affirm them at school.
Encouragement
Whenever your preschooler expresses discouragement or seems down, take the opportunity to encourage and build them up. Point out things they do well or characteristics they have that are important. Unsolicited encouragement can be powerful, as well. If you see your child doing something exceptionally well, let them know!
Helping Others
Another way to promote positivity is to help those around you! You and your child could bake cookies for a new neighbor, bring flowers to a sick friend, or assist an elderly neighbor with chores. A different idea would be to take your child to go volunteer at an animal shelter or soup kitchen. Helping others teaches your child selflessness and gives them a feeling of purpose.
Gratitude Journal
A gratitude journal is a great way to teach our preschoolers to focus on the positive and find joy in each day. This journal could be in a notebook your child uses daily or even a long list you compile as a family and display on the fridge. Before bed, have your child write out things they are thankful for from the day. Allow them to write whatever they like! They could be thankful for a family, for their bike, or for seeing a butterfly.
These suggestions will cultivate positive thinking in your child and in your home. Let’s raise children who are quick to see the good in themselves and others!
