Halloween With Your Preschooler!

Halloween

October is here, which means it’s time to get in the spooky spirit! Halloween is around the corner, but that doesn’t mean you have to resign to the same old traditions when it comes to celebrating this festive holiday with your preschooler. Check out these festive options for celebrating all month long!

Prepare the ultimate candy stash

Just because you and your child may be going out trick-or-treating doesn’t mean you can’t share the fun with your neighbors. Spend time with your preschooler on Halloween preparing the bowl of candy you’ll be giving to other trick-or-treaters. Your child can help you choose which candy to set out on the porch for neighboring kids while you are out on your own trick-or-treating adventures.

Choose a Costume

Choosing a Halloween costume is one of the most fun parts of Halloween! Your child will love looking at all the options and picking one out. If your child has a hard time deciding, only take them to one or two stores and give them a time limit for choosing. Remind them they will get to be something else next year! If buying a costume isn’t your thing, look online for hundreds of easy DIY costume ideas. Your child will love looking for supplies and making a costume together.

Discover the history of Halloween

Another fun way to make celebrating Halloween into an educational activity would be to explore the historical origins of the holiday with your preschooler. The earliest records of Halloween activities trace back to the ancient Celts of Ireland and the United Kingdom, who practiced harvest festivals over 2,000 years ago. Since then, a number of Roman, medieval and other traditions have melded into our own Halloween traditions to create this truly unique holiday. For instance, the tradition of bobbing for apples most likely comes from the Roman celebration to honor Pomona, the goddess of fruit and trees.

There are plenty of ways for you to think outside the box and create a unique Halloween celebration that is educational, fun, and totally sweet!
