Tips to Ease Time Change Transitions for Your Preschooler

Tips to Ease Time Change Transitions for Your Preschooler at Kids 'R' Kids Suwanee, preschool, daycare, childcare

Time change can be a difficult adjustment for preschoolers and a dreaded event for parents. It may feel like just when you’ve finally established a good bedtime routine you spring or fall right out of it! Try out these tips to help ease the time change transition for your preschooler.

Small changes

To help ease the transition, begin by making small adjustments to her bedtime before time change arrives. It can be as easy as moving up (spring) or pushing back (fall) bedtime by 15-minute increments. The first night would be 15 minutes, the second night 30, the third night would be 45, and by the fourth night, 60 minutes. These little adjustments can make a huge difference.

Factor in the light

Time change brings with it changes in natural light. Your preschooler’s bedroom may have too much sunlight at bedtime for her to naturally feel sleepy. Blackout curtains can help block out sunlight. During the day, she will need sunlight poured into her, whether through time outside or opening blinds and curtains. By timely controlling light, this will help with your preschooler’s natural circadian rhythms. Be sure to avoid the blue light of electronics before bed, as this light is known to hinder sleep.

Exercise and Diet

Exercise and healthy foods can also ease the transition. Plenty of fresh air and exercise will help wear out your preschooler helping him unwind and settle at bedtime. A healthful diet also has its benefits. Different foods can either help or hinder time change adjustments. Complex carbohydrates can increase the feelings of fatigue. Whereas, bananas, peanut butter, walnuts, and cherries all contain different beneficial vitamins and minerals that will contribute to falling asleep faster and yield better sleep.

Time change can be difficult for preschoolers. It can yield tantrums and meltdowns as adjustments are made. These adjustments might feel slow and laborious, but most preschoolers will adjust within a week. Remaining calm and patient will go a long way in easing the transition.  Although time change may still present some challenges, a few gentle calibrations can ease the transition. By sticking with a plan your preschooler can be resituated in no time.
