Ways to Participate in Better Breakfast Month with Your Preschooler

Ways to Participate in Better Breakfast Month with Your Preschooler at Kids 'R' Kids Stafford, preschool, daycare, childcare

In many places, September means back to school.  What an excellent opportunity to begin anew and practice healthy eating habits with your preschooler.  The fact that it is also Better Breakfast Month is the icing on the cake!

“Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.”

We have all heard it, but have you ever wondered why?  Children who eat a balanced breakfast are much more capable of staying awake, paying attention, being in a better mood, and are ready to learn.

How can I make sure my preschooler gets a “better breakfast?”

Ask your toddler to help you choose foods from the major food groups.  It is a wonderful place to start!  Usually, young children are more open to trying things they picked out themselves.  Healthy grains can be found in cereals and breads that provide iron and fiber.  Fruits, such as apples, bananas, and oranges are loaded with vitamins and minerals in addition to being quick and delicious. Milk, yogurt, and cheese provide calcium for strong teeth and bones.  Bacon, ham, and sausage are traditional breakfast meats that can provide protein for healthy muscles. It is not always possible to make a big breakfast spread in the morning, so do the best you can to find a good balance of foods.  Try a healthy smoothie one morning and eggs and berries the next.  Have a healthy cereal with a banana.  You can build the breakfast around your time constraints and your preschooler’s palate if you give it a little thought in advance.

What to Avoid

While you do not need to cut any foods out completely unless there is a known food allergy, use common sense about what to avoid.  Foods loaded with sugar, corn syrup, artificial dyes, etc., should be given only occasionally. In addition to being unhealthy, they will not fill your toddler up for very long and could cause some negative behaviors.  There is no need to throw out your entire pantry, but in the future, try to purchase more healthy options.

Whether you are on the go or taking things slow in the morning, focus on providing the most nutritional foods you can.  Use September to build better eating habits that can last all year!
