Winter Travel Tips for Families with Preschoolers

Winter Travel Tips for Families with Preschoolers at Kids 'R' Kids Stafford, preschool, daycare, childcare

Traveling with preschoolers requires a lot of planning! Add in the unpredictability of winter weather and the extra space needed for bulky winter clothes, and you will need a lot of patience too. Some families love to travel, and others do it out of necessity to be with family over the holidays. Either way, here are some winter travel tips for families with preschoolers.

Use space savers!

Winter clothes take up a lot of space, especially if you are packing snow gear. Packing cubes can help you stay organized and save space in your luggage. Winter weather means you need lots of layers! Consider putting larger items like coats in vacuum sealed bags. Even things like mittens, hats, and scarves may not be needed until you reach your destination and might also be okay in a space saver bag.

Don’t pack everything!

Winter weather and winter activities require more clothing and equipment. If you are traveling by plane with car seats and the airline charges extra for baggage, you can stuff a few coats inside one of those car seat check bag covers like this one. If you are planning to use the car seats on the plane or are driving by car, you may consider these other options. First, you could ship some of your items to your destination ahead of time. Or you could wait and purchase those things after you arrive. Depending on where you are going and what types of things you need, you may also be able to borrow or rent items while at your destination.

Take the trip!

Sometimes traveling with preschoolers feels like more trouble than it is worth. Take the trip! Bring plenty of snacks. Food always helps with boredom and keeps them (and you) from getting hangry. Plan to take plenty of breaks. It may extend your trip a little bit, but taking frequent breaks where everyone can stretch and burn off some energy is beneficial in the long run. Also, bring some small toys, coloring books, and books. If space is limited, pack those in a small backpack that your child can carry. Mix in a few new items to keep them interested on those long trips.
