Age-Appropriate Skills to Teach Your Preschooler

Age-Appropriate Skills to Teach Your Preschooler at Kids 'R' Kids Stafford, preschool, childcare, daycare

All children learn and grow at their own pace. Parents often find themselves comparing their preschooler with other children of similar ages. It can be overwhelming to think about all the things a child needs to learn and accomplish as they grow. As the parent, you want to make sure they are on the right track. While there are many physical, emotional, social, and life skills that children will master before they leave home, here are four skills that parents should be teaching their preschooler.

Listening Skills

Listening is more than hearing the words being said. Listening involves the preschooler’s ability to hear the words, understand them, and then do something with what he heard. Parents can model being good listeners and guide their children too. A good listener makes eye contact, pays attention to the person speaking, does not interrupt, asks questions, and encourages the speaker with non-verbal communication like a smile or a head nod. When reading a story with your child, practice using good listening skills to ensure they understand the story, remember it, and can discuss it with you.

Social Skills

Preschool is the perfect time to learn about sharing, taking turns, getting along, and working through conflict. Parents are building the foundation for skills that their child will continue to develop over their lifetime. Role playing is a great way to practice the proper way to respond.

Fine Motor Skills

There is such an emphasis on fine motor skills at a young age, because it prepares the children’s hands to write. Working with safety scissors is a common skill that is difficult for many young children and takes much practice. Besides cutting with scissors and practicing tracing and writing letters, parents can do activities that use beads, crayons, tongs, and tweezers to help preschoolers develop their fine motor skills.

Life Skills

Your preschooler is ready to learn practical life skills like brushing their teeth and getting dressed. You may not realize that your child is ready to help prepare meals and start doing chores. Preschoolers can help put dishes and laundry away, pick up after themselves, set the table, and wipe countertops and sinks. Giving your child chores teaches them self-reliance and responsibility.

This is not an exhaustive list! As your child matures and masters these skills, there will be opportunities to add new skills to the list.
