The weather is warming up and we can finally get outside! Nature walks are a great way to spend time with your preschooler, get some exercise, and learn along the way.
Before heading out for your walk, create a list of items for your preschooler to find. These can be items to collect (i.e. pinecones, acorns, leaves, etc.) or items to spot in the environment (i.e. red car, fire hydrant, barking dog, etc.). If you are collecting items, take a bag along to make carrying the items easier. You can also collect various nature items to create a nature walk collage upon returning home.
This activity requires zero preparation and lots of imagination! If it is a cloudy day, talk about the shapes you see in the clouds with your preschooler. Work with your preschooler to come up with a story about what the clouds are doing. For example, if you see a cloud shaped like an elephant, he could be going on a jungle adventure to find his elephant buddy. This is a great time to talk about wind and weather, if the clouds are moving across the sky!
Stop and Smell the Roses
Flowers are abundant in Spring! Take some time during your nature walk to stop and smell the flowers. Talk about the different colors and shapes of the flowers you find. You can even talk about how those flowers grew (e.g. someone planted them or growing wild) or what flowers need to grow.
Practice some literacy skills by taking turns finding items in nature that begin with different letters of the alphabet. You can call out random letters or run through the alphabet in order. For example, you could point out a bird for letter B or a car for letter C.
Take advantage of the warmer weather and go for a fun nature walk with your preschooler!
