Teaching Preschoolers to Set Goals

Teaching Preschoolers to Set Goals at Kids 'R' Kids Stafford, preschool, daycare, childcare

Your preschooler may practice the lyrics of a beloved song for hours or stubbornly insist on doing something “by myself” because all preschoolers love to learn. As a parent, you can help your preschooler learn new skills–whether tying laces or brushing teeth, sweeping a floor or feeding a pet–by teaching your little one about goal setting. And by practicing goal setting with your child, you can help your preschooler learn how to have fun along the way!

Basics of goal setting

A goal is simply a task that someone wants to accomplish, and accomplishing a desired goal often comes by breaking that task into small, specific, sequential steps. By teaching your preschooler about how to take these steps toward a desired goal, you can help your little one to grow in patience and perseverance. And, once the goal has been reached, you can celebrate together!

Goal setting with your preschooler

  1. Talk with your preschooler about a skill your little one may want to learn, whether putting on a new pair of shoes or hitting a t-ball across the yard. Discuss what small, specific, sequential steps might be a part of learning this new skill.
  2. Complete the first step with your preschooler, such as pulling on a shoe or setting up a t-ball area. Practice together a few times, maybe adding additional steps, and remember to praise effort along the way. Part of your goal as a parent is to help your child to learn how to enjoy the process of setting and pursuing goals!
  3. Once the new skill has been learned, take time to celebrate! A big whoop and a victory dance can help your child to feel recognized and respected. And then look for opportunities to reinforce the new skill during the coming days. Before long, your preschooler will be proficient and ready to tackle the next goal with you!
