Keep America Beautiful Month is in April! There are many ways to do our part in keeping America beautiful, but today we are going to talk about gardening with your preschooler. This activity is perfect for children because it touches on their natural curiosity and allows them to play in the dirt!
The first step in starting a garden is figuring out what to grow. You might want to do some research on what plants grow best in your climate, some of our kid-friendly favorites are cherry tomatoes, sunflowers, potatoes, carrots, and nasturtiums. The plants are particularly good for gardening with children because they mature quickly and require low to medium maintenance. Additionally, it will be really fun for your child to grow veggies that they can eat!
Now that you know what you are planting, you will need to decide where to plant it. Raised beds are a popular option, but ground plots will work too. We’ve even seen some resourceful parents repurpose old and unused sandboxes into gardens. Give each child in your family a section of the garden to plant in and be responsible for. Instead of spending money on children’s gardening tools that will easily break, just use regular ones and help your preschooler if they need it. To help keep your child interested in gardening, encourage them to check on the plants every few days and show pictures of their garden to their friends and family. You might need to help your child and do some work behind the scenes if they aren’t always interested in tending to their garden.
A few months of hard work and diligence will result in a beautiful, blooming garden and fresh produce for your family. Starting a garden will teach your children patience and persistence, not to mention helping keep America beautiful!
