Seasonal Changes – Springtime with Your Preschooler

Seasonal Changes – Springtime with Your Preschooler

Springtime not only brings more sunshine and warmer, longer days, but there are so many great activities and crafts inspired by the colors and new life of spring to enjoy with toddlers and preschoolers. Take advantage of the sunshine and warmth to do these activities outdoors.

Spring Sensory Bin

Make a spring sensory bin to keep your preschooler busy and entertained. Sensory bins are especially fun for younger preschoolers and toddlers. This project can be made with dry food items you already have at home, but also items you can easily find at your local dollar store. Add dry black beans, Fiori pasta noodles colored to look like flowers (use food coloring or washable markers in another activity with your child), and plastic bugs in a bin. Colorful water beads may also be used in place of the beans! Encourage free play, or structure the activity by having your preschooler find and count all the bugs in the bin.

Egg Carton Flowers

Egg carton flowers are a perfect activity that will teach your preschooler about recycling and reusing materials instead of throwing them away! Cut a cardboard egg carton into sections of four “petals” and let your preschooler paint the carton with acrylic pants. Use springy pastels and bright colors to create beautiful floral creations. Glue a bright pom pom to the flower’s center, and use a paper straw as a “stem.” These colorful spring crafts will also make a great Mother’s Day gift.

Nature Walk

Take a nature walk to look for the signs of spring everywhere! Talk with your preschooler about what we see outdoors that show us spring is on its way. Point out leaves, plant growth, colorful flowers, and other springtime signs. Turn your nature walk into a scavenger hunt and nature walk outdoors and see how many signs of spring you can find together!
