Preschooler Friendly Chores

Preschooler Friendly Chores

Depending on how you grew up, chores were probably an integral part of your childhood starting when you were in preschool. However, the degree to which actions can be attributed to the term “chores” can vary greatly. For sake of conversation and hoping you had an enjoyable childhood, it is probably safe to assume that your chores did not compare to a Little House on the Prairie level. If you did happen to be required to milk the cows at the crack of dawn, more power to you! Nevertheless, introducing chores can be an integral part of your child’s development, especially if you can start early while they are at a preschool age. Not only can chores help develop responsibility, but also independence as they grow. Here’s some ideas for some first baby steps:

Taking Responsibility for their Space

An easy first step to teach your preschooler about chores is to instill a sense of ownership with their own possessions. Now it’s their bed, their toys, their mess. By explaining that those things don’t take care of themselves, you can start to approach the idea of how to take care of those things. Beds need making, toys need to be put away, messes need cleaning. Don’t just throw the idea of it at them, but have them join you in the endeavor, and use it as an opportunity to build up their confidence.

Make Attainable Goals

As much as using your children as your personal cleaning squad sounds wonderful and would most likely allow for that spa day you’ve been holding out for, it’s probably not reasonable to expect them to be waxing the floors after one week. Instead, if they are given small tasks that are manageable and on their scale, then not only will they be motivated to finish it, but it can teach your preschooler the value of completing what they started. So whether its brushing the dog, helping unload the dishwasher, or just helping you fold a blanket, the end result is the same – a growing understanding of responsibility and independence. As much as you don’t want your preschooler to grow up, having them begin chores at a young age is vital to their development.
