Before you sit down for Thanksgiving dinner, take some time to teach your preschooler about the origin of Thanksgiving and why we celebrate! Here are some of our favorite ways to teach our children about Thanksgiving!
Talk About the Meaning of Thanksgiving
Dive into the history of Thanksgiving and how a harvest brought together different types of people: Pilgrims and Native Americans. There are some great books out there that are available to help you teach your child. A more complete understanding will help your child grow in appreciation of the holiday.
Talk About Your Feast
Discuss with your child and family where all the food at your table came from. Then, let people share what their favorite part of the meal was. Next year, maybe your child can help make their favorite dish!
Thanksgiving Journal
One of our favorite traditions is the Thanksgiving Journal. At the top of the first page, write the year. Then, have each person pass the journal and write their name and what they are thankful for this year. Next year, do the same and continue the tradition. Our favorite part of this is looking back year after year and seeing how much things have changed! We love this idea because it helps you focus on the reason we celebrate Thanksgiving!
Share & Donate
Find a way to give back to your community and make it a Thanksgiving tradition. You could donate a Thanksgiving meal to a family or bring pies to celebrate with senior citizens. Whatever you do, you’ll be creating an atmosphere that promotes the importance of helping others.
We hope you will take advantage of these ideas to teach your child about Thanksgiving this season and reap the benefits of having a child who understands and honors this Thanksgiving holiday!
