Keep America Beautiful Month: Gardening With Your Preschooler

Keep America Beautiful Month: Gardening With Your Preschooler

April is Keep America Beautiful Month! A great way to do our part is to plant a garden! Gardening is a great activity with preschoolers because they are curious, love to play in the dirt, and will have the opportunity to learn more about the environment.

One of the hardest parts of gardening is figuring out what to grow! Take into account your surroundings when choosing plants, but here are some of our top picks for kids:

  1.     Cherry Tomatoes
  2.     Sunflowers
  3.     Potatoes
  4.     Carrots
  5.     Nasturtiums

These plants are great for kids because they mature relatively quickly and are low-maintenance, not to mention the vegetables are edible! Your kids will love that. Many times, children will be interested in growing strawberries, but they can be tricky to keep predators off of.

Once you and your preschooler decide what to plant, you’ll need to figure out where to plant it. You can use raised beds or ground plots and surprisingly, converting a sandbox into a garden bed works surprisingly well. If you have more than one child gardening, make sure to give each child their own section so they can develop a sense of ownership. Don’t worry about getting children’s gardening tools, instead help them use the real ones that work much better. You’ll have to work with your child, they might not always be interested in gardening, so help out behind the scenes, especially if they haven’t seen much progress in their plants. To keep them engaged, encourage them to check on the progress of their garden every few days, let them show pictures of their garden to friends and family, and engage them in garden-related activities that might be more exciting, like building a scarecrow.

After a few months of diligence on you and your child’s part, you will have a blooming garden! Gardening is a great activity for preschoolers because it teaches them patience, ownership, and shows them that hard work pays off!
