Helping Your Preschooler Grow Up to be a Lifelong Reader

Helping Your Preschooler Grow Up to be a Lifelong Reader at Kids 'R' Kids of Sienna, childcare, daycare, children

All parents want their preschoolers to be successful when they grow up, but even more important than this is to raise lifelong learners and critical thinkers. How can a parent actively nurture these qualities in their child? Raise a child who loves to read! Read on for tips on helping your preschooler grow up to be a lifelong reader.

Start Early

Start reading to your child when they are an infant. If you have not been doing this consistently with your child until this point, now is a perfect time to begin! Reading to infants and preschoolers will help to build their verbal and cognitive skills from the start.

Have In-Depth Discussions

Thoroughly discuss what you are reading! Ask your child questions about stories and pictures. Point things out to your preschooler, and create learning moments for your child. Nudge your child to try to predict what may happen next!

Be Intentional

Schedule a special time each day for reading with your toddler. Bedtime is a high-ranking contender for this special time, as this is a wonderful time to connect with your child and discuss the highlights of their day, as well.

Be a Role Model

Set an example for your child by putting your phones and tablets down, and instead, pick up a book of your own to read. You may prefer a magazine or newspaper instead. Whatever you choose, your child will notice your interest in reading and want to mimic your behavior.

Go to the Library

You do not need to own your own library at home, as many towns and cities have public libraries available to the community. Own a few of your family’s favorite books to keep at home, and use the public library to explore new topics and ideas. Take the time to create a library card for your preschoolers– this will be one of their first experiences with identification, and it will make them feel very grown up!

Practice Repetition

Reading the same books over and over will help to create associations between words and their meanings, and between words and pictures. When re-reading a book for what seems like the hundredth time (or more), help your little one to look for things you may not have noticed before.

Reading together will give your preschooler a gift they will always remember.  Spending time together, learning together, and imagining together will grow your bond and foster a love for reading in your child.
