Nap Time Tips to Help Your Preschooler Get the Sleep They Need

Are you and your child frustrated by nap time? Is your child having trouble staying asleep for a significant period of time, or refusing to be put down for a nap when they need one? Nap time can be a challenging time for parents and preschoolers alike. It’s important to create an environment that is conducive to rest and relaxation! Here are some nap time tips to help your preschooler get the sleep they need.

Establish a consistent nap time routine

Our bodies recognize and respond to routine. Your child’s body does too! You and your preschooler can go through the same routine each day before naps, which will help them recognize when it’s time for sleep! Parts of this routine can include changing into pajamas, brushing teeth, reading a story, singing a song, and getting tucked in.

Be flexible

It is difficult as a busy parent to stay flexible when it comes to nap time, but if your preschooler is still having trouble napping, don’t be afraid to listen to their needs and adjust the routine accordingly! Try different things to help them wind down, such as taking a warm bath or doing some light stretching. Try different ways of soothing your child – rubbing their back, brushing their hair, rocking them in a rocking chair – and see what they prefer.

Create the right environment

Make sure the environment your child is napping in is comfortable and relaxing. This could include dimming the lights, playing soothing music, or using a white noise machine! Some parents like to use a humidifier, or even a special light to signal to their preschooler that it is nap time.

Nap time is an important part of your preschooler’s day. By following these tips, you can take steps to ensure that your child is getting the rest their developing brain needs during naps.
