Ideas on How To Teach Empathy To Your Preschooler

at Kids ‘R’ Kids Oakbrook, preschool, daycare, childcare

As parents, we all want what is best for our kids, and to help them be prepared for their future. An incredibly important part of that preparation is the development of empathy, or understanding and recognizing the emotions of other people. Here are a few ideas on how to aid your preschooler in developing this ability.

Movie Discussions

Discussing a movie after viewing it can further help your child understand the value of empathizing with people who are facing tough times or difficult choices in life. Asking your child questions like “how did that make you feel?” “What do you think they were feeling?” will help them think critically about the characters’ decisions while also exploring their own values around similar situations.

Teach Self-Empathy

Self-empathy is just as important as learning how to empathize with others and requires children to develop understanding of their own emotions before they can recognize those of other people! Help your little one practice self-care by providing activities that nurture their inner self such as silent meditations of gratitude. Incorporate habits such as journaling where they can document how they feel after experiencing significant experiences, which will also build self-confidence.

Make Time To Connect With Your Child

On top of providing physical activities for your child, make sure you also prioritize quality time spent together! Whether you’re playing together outdoors or simply sitting down for conversations about everyday life experiences, time spent connecting with your child is never a waste. This tip is especially important if you have more than one child, where delivering individual attention can be challenging sometimes. Doing so will not only strengthen your bond but open up opportunities for meaningful chats where they can feel heard and validated.

Teaching empathy to your preschooler is an important step in helping them develop into compassionate and well-rounded people! From discussing movies to teaching self-empathy, there are plenty of ways you can aid your child on this journey. So make sure to keep these tips in mind and encourage your preschooler to practice empathy – it will benefit them well into their adulthood!
