Help Your Preschooler Beat the Back-to-School Blues

Help Your Preschooler Beat the Back-to-School Blues at Kids 'R' Kids Oakbrook, preschool, daycare, childcare

Where did the summer go? It seems that school just ended and the much-needed summer break began yesterday. However, back-to-school season is around the corner, so let’s walk through some ways to beat those back-to-school blues you and your preschooler may be experiencing.

Special Time

Plan a day to spend with your preschooler prior to him returning to school. This day can be spent doing a big activity (i.e. trip to a water park or theme park) or doing your preschooler’s favorite activities (i.e. playing at the park with a picnic lunch followed by ice cream). Since the goal is to spend special time bonding with your preschooler and soaking up every moment you can making memories, the activities do not need to be extravagant or costly – just fun and memorable!

Special Purchase

As the time draws nearer for school to begin, take your preschooler shopping for school supplies. Even if they don’t have a supply list to purchase from, take them to choose a special outfit, stuffed animal, or backpack. This special item will help build excitement for the first day of school!

Be Excited

Children feed off the energy of the adults around them and mimic our emotions. If we are anxious and showing sadness about the end of summer break, chances are our little ones will feel those same feelings. Try to avoid showing your preschooler any negative emotions you are experiencing about the return of school. Instead, talk about all the exciting things a new school year brings (i.e. new friends, fun activities at school, recess, etc.).

Routine

The return of the school year means an early bedtime and wake time for a lot of families. An earlier bedtime can be a real bummer for a preschooler. To help soften this transition, ease into an early bedtime by moving your preschooler’s bedtime fifteen minutes earlier every couple nights until the desired bedtime is reached. It is important to keep the bedtime routine the same to help signal to your preschooler’s body that it is time to sleep.

By using these tips, you are bound to get your preschooler excited for the start of school!
