Childproofing Tips for New Parents

Childproofing Tips for New Parents at Kids 'R' Kids Oakbrook, preschool, daycare, childcare

A new baby brings lots of joy and excitement. Yet, the new responsibility can also bring new concerns and uncertainty over the many potential dangers lurking around the home. By taking the time to childproof your home, you can ensure a safe environment for your newest family member. Here are some childproofing tips for new parents to consider:

Living areas

Living areas are where a family often spends most of their time. Little fingers enjoy placing things into holes, so remember to childproof the electrical outlets by installing covers and/or plugs. Next, take inventory of hard objects that may fall over on your baby and consider moving them to a different location or even be packed away for a season. As for heavy furniture, including TVs, purchase and install anchors to prevent them from falling over onto your baby. Lastly, sharp corners can be covered to prevent crawling or tumbling injuries.

Laundry room

The laundry room is a good place to store detergents and cleaning products. Consider moving all detergents and chemicals up high, where small children cannot reach. Locks can also be installed on cabinets as an extra layer of protection.

Bathroom

The bathroom holds many potential dangers. First, the water needs to be set at 120° or less to prevent scalding your child accidentally. Second, the toilet needs to have a lock installed preventing your curious baby from falling in and potentially drowning. Third, the cabinets and drawers need to also be locked, as often many products dangerous to preschoolers are stored inside. Finally, medications need to be placed up high, in an area out of a child’s reach. Don’t count on child proof lids being sufficient.

Kitchen

Drawers or cabinets that contain dangerous items; scissors, matches, plastic sacks, knives, glass containers, cleaning products, etc., need to be secured. This can be done through reorganizing your kitchen or by installing locks for the cabinets and drawers containing harmful items. There are many lock options!

Windows

Blind and drape strings present a strangulation hazard. Cords need to be kept out of reach of children. Install locks or guards on your windows to keep your preschooler safe from falling out.

This is not an all-inclusive list, but by starting here, you will likely discover similar safety concerns that can quickly be remedied. With just a little work you can provide a safe home for your family!
