Summer Learning at Home with Preschoolers

Summer Learning at Home with Preschoolers at Kids 'R' Kids Oakbrook, preschool, daycare, childcare

Is your precious little preschooler home from preschool all summer?  If you’re like most parents, you want to keep your little one learning and occupied without spending tons of money.  Luckily, there are plenty of fun, easy ways to keep your preschooler engaged and learning over the summer months!

Themes

Choose a couple fun themes to dive into with your preschooler and plan activities around those themes.  Oceans are a popular summer theme for preschool learning fun and offer a variety of things to study.  Commotion in the Ocean by Giles Andreae is a rhyming book that introduces many of the animals which live under the sea.  Your preschooler may enjoy choosing an animal from the book each week to study.  Check out non-fiction books from the library and learn more about each one.

For a fun ocean themed math activity, have your preschooler paint or color a paper plate.  Next, punch ten holes in a row at the bottom of a paper plate.  Tie chenille stems to each hole and write numbers one through ten above each hole.  Give your preschooler a handful of colored beads and ask her to sort them by color.  Finally, ask her to thread the beads onto the chenille stems according to the numbers above the hole.

Outdoor Literacy

Break out the sidewalk chalk and have literacy fun outside.  Create a six by six grid (thirty-six total squares).  Write a letter in each box.  Mix the letters up so they are not in order and leave spaces blank as free spaces.  Ask your preschooler to hop on the letters of the alphabet as he recites the alphabet.  He can use the free spaces to land on, if the distance is too far.  Alternately, practice spelling his name by jumping to the letters of his name.

Summer learning at home does not need to be extravagant for your preschooler to keep up with his learning.  Incorporate literacy and numbers into his play and he will learn while playing!
