Helping Your Toddler Through a Meltdown

Helping Your Toddler Through a Meltdown at Kids 'R' Kids Oakbrook, preschool, daycare, childcare

Having a preschooler can be a lot of fun…until it’s not.  Tantrums can be a parent’s worst nightmare, but with a few tools in your belt, you may be able to guide your toddler away from them a little better.

Why do tantrums happen?

At times, tantrums are a result of a little person with big feelings who does not know how to manage those feelings yet.  It could also be the result of not getting their way.  Young children have not developed good coping skills yet, so they will need your help.  Maybe she is trying to be independent but is having a challenging time completing a task.  She needs your help but does not want it.  Remember that struggling and failing are good for your child.  Without struggle there is no real progress or development.

What do you do?

Stay calm, collected, and consistent.  Do not force her to accept help. You can either ignore her (if nobody is being hurt) or send her (or take her) somewhere secure where she can have her outburst alone (such as on her bed).  Tell her she can join everyone else again when she is done with her tantrum and has calmed down.  Then, close the door and go away.  Tantrums are not as fun without an audience, so it should get old quickly.  Try helping her with the task later when she has had a chance to calm down and try again.

What not to do

Regardless of the approach you choose, do not bribe or promise some type of reward for them to stop acting out.  If you told them “No,” do not change your answer just to get them to stop throwing a tantrum.  This only encourages them to act out again in the future.  If you are calm and consistent in your approach to tantrums, your preschooler will learn not to test the boundaries and both of you will be much happier.
