Three Ways Preschoolers Benefit from Music

Three Ways Preschoolers Benefit from Music at Kids 'R' Kids Oakbrook, preschool, daycare, childcare

Preschoolers like singing just to be singing. They are not worried about how they sound or how good of a singer they are. They just belt out their favorite tunes without caring who is listening. While music is fun, it can also be educational. Here are three ways preschoolers benefit from music.

Development

Music awakens many areas of child development including intellectual, social-emotional, motor skills, and language. It helps the body and the mind work together. Introducing children to music during their early years helps them learn the sounds and meanings of words. Dancing to music helps children build motor skills while allowing them to practice self-expression. Preschool children enjoy a variety of types of music including nursery rhymes and songs about familiar things like toys, animals, play activities, and people. They also enjoy finger plays with or without music. A music-rich environment that includes listening, singing, and moving helps children progress into formal learning.

Academics

Music gives your preschooler skills needed for school readiness. According to the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation (NAMM Foundation), learning to play an instrument can improve mathematical learning, retention of vocabulary, and even increase SAT scores. Most preschool children enjoy singalong songs that involve counting, spelling, or remembering a sequence of events. For children and adults, music helps strengthen memory skills.

Creativity

Singing, dancing, and playing an instrument can stimulate creativity. When children make up their own lyrics, create their own dance moves, or even come up with an original song using an instrument, they are expanding their imagination. This is a form of divergent thinking, which is a creative thinking process and a way to generate new ideas, as well as convergent thinking which is narrowing down choices and choosing the best option. Your preschooler does not realize that they are flexing their brain’s creativity muscle. They probably are just having fun!

By freely making music with their voices and bodies, children learn to express ideas and strengthen their memories. Whether they are singing along to a song, playing an instrument, or dancing to music, most preschoolers thoroughly enjoy participating in musical activities.
