Getting Your Preschooler Ready to Welcome a New Sibling

Getting Your Preschooler Ready to Welcome a New Sibling at Kids 'R' Kids Oakbrook, preschool, daycare, childcare

You are expecting a new addition to your family, which is an exciting time for any family.  This transition can cause anxiety in parents about how their preschooler will adjust to having a new sibling.  With a few simple actions, you can make this transition to big brother or big sister easier on your preschooler.

Talk about the New Addition

Using age-appropriate vocabulary, discuss what is happening with your preschooler.  Explain how the baby is growing and getting stronger in preparation for her debut.  Let your preschooler know the new baby will do a lot of sleeping and crying in the beginning.  Discuss the fact that the new baby won’t be a playmate right away and the importance of being careful and gentle with her.

Make Adjustments Early

Adding a new member to the family may require shifting in rooms or sleeping arrangements.  If this is necessary, try to make the change prior to the new baby’s arrival.  Your little one will have plenty of new things to get used to once the new baby arrives and it will make things easier, if he has had time to become accustomed to his new sleeping arrangements or bedroom.

Read Books

There are several children’s picture books on the topic of getting a new sibling.  Check out a few from your local library and read with your preschooler.  This will help open the conversation with your preschooler and give her a chance to voice any concerns or anxieties she is having about her new sibling.

Include Your Preschooler

Involve your preschooler in preparing for the new sibling and in helping with the new sibling.  Take your preschooler shopping to pick out a special outfit for the new baby or a special toy.  Your preschooler may even like the idea of wearing coordinating outfits with his new sibling!  Once the new baby arrives, continue to involve your preschooler.  Your preschooler can do simple tasks, such as collecting diapering supplies or choosing outfits.

Your preschooler may have a difficult time at first, but she will love her new sibling.  They are sure to form an unbreakable bond in no time!
