Getting Your Preschooler Ready for Kindergarten

Getting Your Preschooler Ready for Kindergarten at Kids 'R' Kids Oakbrook, preschool, daycare, childcare

Brace for it! Your preschooler is ready for a new and big phase in life—kindergarten! While your child has already learned a lot of important things for academic readiness, there are certainly practical ideas to help your preschooler ease into kindergarten, regarding either academic practice or emotional support.

Here are a few ideas to get your creative juices flowing to help get your preschooler ready to enter kindergarten:

  1. Consider the Highlights Kindergarten Big Fun Workbook. One of the main purposes of this book is to help build confidence by introducing different learning activities. Some of the activities are designed to cover skills your preschooler will learn in kindergarten, but the book still includes fun Hidden Pictures that can be found in the traditional Highlights magazine. This particular book also comes with bonus activities to do online.
  2. Introduce your child to the book, Goodbye Preschool, Hello Kindergarten by Sonica Ellis. This is a sweet book about a young duck who just graduated preschool. In the process, the book introduces the excitement of entering kindergarten.
  3. Try to communicate as much information up front (as possible) about this preschool-to-kindergarten transition. It is okay for you preschooler to be scared! Allow your child the opportunity to ask as many questions as desired. If you are unable to answer some, let your child know that you will ask the new teacher.
  4. Allow your child the opportunity to meet the new kindergarten teacher and some of the school office staff. The more familiar faces your child knows, the better!
  5. Try to make school supply shopping more than just something bothersome to check off your to-do list. As much as you are able, make it a fun outing, free from stress!

There will never be another summer quite like this one! Make it special. Do what you think is best for your child for kindergarten readiness. Your emotional support, though, will be the anchor in which your child can fully rest!
