The Benefits of Sensory Bottles for Toddlers

The Benefits of Sensory Bottles for Toddlers at Kids 'R' Kids Oakbrook, preschool, daycare, childcare

Does your child ever become anxious, upset, bored, or simply hard to calm down (like at bedtime!)? Sensory bottles, or calming bottles, as they are sometimes called, may be the solution you have been looking for.  Uses of sensory bottles range from social, behavioral, and even educational. You can easily make them with your choice of objects and fluid inside.

Social Uses

Sensory bottles are fun and engaging.  They are something that a preschooler cannot wait to have in his own hands!  Use that allure to teach your child how to be patient and wait for their turn. Set a timer for two or three minutes and let your child play with the bottle.  When time is up, instruct him to pass it to someone else.  Not only is he learning to wait, but he is also learning to share!

Behavioral Uses

As mentioned before, many times sensory bottles are referred to as calming bottles.  When your child is anxious, upset, or hyper, give her a bottle to play with.  There is something soothing and relaxing about watching the objects float and gently sink to the bottom.  Shaking the bottle up also uses up some of that extra energy!  Consistently playing with sensory bottles as part of a bedtime routine could help to cue your toddler that it is almost time to settle down and rest.

Educational Uses

Because there are so many things that can be put into a sensory bottle, it is easy to use them to reinforce new things your child is learning.  If your child is working on letter recognition, try making a bottle with letter beads inside.  You can make a game out of finding the letters.  Or, have some science fun with it!  Put things of different sizes and weights inside and see which one sinks first or last.

No matter the reason you use sensory bottles, remember it should be fun!  Include your child in making them and have a great time together learning and exploring the magic of sensory bottles!
