Questions to Ask Your Preschooler Instead of, “How was your day?”

Questions to Ask Your Preschooler Instead of, “How was your day?”

If you’re like most parents, you’re getting tired of your preschooler answering “good” or “fine” every time you ask them about their day at school. To help cultivate deeper conversations, try out some of these questions instead of, “How was your day?”

  1. Who did you play with today? What did you do with them?
  2. What or who made you smile today?
  3. I had a granola bar for a snack today. What did you have?
  4. Did you play any fun games at recess? Who did you play them with?
  5. Tell me something new you learned today. Will you teach it to me?
  6. What was the best part of your day?
  7. Did anything make you sad?
  8. What did you laugh at today?
  9. Is there anything you’d like to do this weekend?
  10. What made you feel loved today?
  11. Who had the best lunch at school? What was in it?
  12. Did anyone do something nice for you? Did you do anything kind for someone else?
  13. Is there anyone you’d like to become friends with?
  14. Were there any rules that were hard to follow today?
  15. What do you feel proud of today?

Try out these questions to help you have more meaningful conversations with your preschooler. Remember to keep your questions specific, and try leading with information about your day before asking your child about theirs!
