With school costume parties and church trunk-or-treats, there are lots of fun ways to get copious amounts of Halloween candy, but nothing beats going door to door with friends and neighbors, ringing doorbells, and shouting “Trick or Treat!” If you decide to take your preschooler out in your neighborhood on Halloween night, follow these Halloween tips to make sure everyone has fun and stays safe!
Stay Well-Lit
Autumn evenings get dark in early, which can make it hard to see and be seen during trick-or-treating festivities. Bring a flashlight with fresh batteries to shine a light on pot holes and bumpy sidewalks, but also to keep other people and cars aware of your presence.
Costume Safety
Even the best Halloween costumes, while adorable, can create safety hazards for your preschooler! Masks can impair vision, and princess gowns and spooky ghostly capes can be long enough to trip over. Opt for non-toxic makeup instead of masks, and check your child’s costume length before going out. You may need to do a quick hem! Hem tape is a time saver.
Safety in Numbers
Trick-or-treating is the most fun when done with your friends and family! Go in small groups, and make sure there are enough trusted adults to keep an eye on the little ones. Child safety experts recommend one adult for every three to six children.
Plan Your Route
Preschoolers and children tire quickly and easily, so plan which routes and areas to visit. Stay in neighborhoods close to home or consider driving to a nearby neighborhood and sticking close to your car, so that little legs don’t have as far to go when it’s time to go home and count candy (after Mom and Dad check it, of course)!
