Preparing Your First-Time Preschooler

first time preschooler

It’s back-to-school time, and if you’re getting ready to send your little darling to preschool, it is never too early to start preparing. The first few days of preschool may be overwhelming, both for you and your child. By spending a few weeks getting your mind wrapped around back-to-school, you’ll both be more than ready for the first day of preschool.

Put your TV to good use

Watch your child’s favorite preschool show with them and talk to them about going to school. Daniel Tiger and Peppa Pig are great shows to teach your preschooler about what it will be like to go to school for the first time.

Visit your new school

It is incredibly important for your preschooler to spend time in their new school. Talk about your visit, meet your child’s teacher, spend time in the new classroom. This will help your child feel more comfortable in their new school on their first day. They will recognize their classroom when they walk in on their first day!

Test out the supplies

Let your child play with their new supplies—wear their backpack, pack their lunch, sleep on their nap mat before school starts! This will help your preschooler recognize their own supplies at school and be comfortable sleeping on their nap mat during nap time.

Talk about school

Especially the week leading up to the first day of school, talk about the new routine, your child’s teacher, talk about how much fun your child will have with new friends. You might think your child is too young to understand, but children process much more than we think. They will pick up so much from your conversations about school.

Be prepared for anything on day one

Your child may completely defy your expectations and walk right into his classroom without shedding a tear. Or, your new preschooler may cling to your leg for dear life. Do yourselves both a favor and drop and go. It may take weeks, but dropping your child off with their teacher quickly will help them transition much better than sticking around until they stop crying.

These steps will help prepare your child for their first, second and third days of preschool!
