As your preschooler is learning about themselves and their feelings, discipline can be a difficult and daunting task. Check out our tips below to help discipline your child and start your child on the journey of becoming a responsible and mature grade-schooler.
Say Yes When You Can
Try to tell your preschooler ‘yes’ whenever you can. It may not be ideal for your child to wear their cowboy boots every day, but it isn’t a hazard to their safety, health, or wellbeing. Since our children hear ‘no’ a lot at this age, try to save that response for when they are doing something that could be dangerous.
Stand Firm
Stand firm when you give your child an answer about something. When we say ‘no’ to something and then they throw a tantrum, we can’t change our answer! If we do, your child will begin to think that they will get their way whenever they throw a tantrum, which is not a fun place for anyone to be.
Help Cope With Emotions
Your preschooler might be small, but they have mighty emotions that they don’t know how to cope with yet. Model healthy coping skills to them such as taking a deep breath, counting to ten, or asking for help. Always remember to stay calm and give them what they need while they try to figure out what they are feeling and how to deal with it.
Use Appropriate Consequences
For most parents, it is easy to default to time out as a punishment for everything. It is an easy one and seems fairly effective. However, it is much more effective to use relevant and logical consequences. When your child throws food, make them clean it up. They will begin connecting in their head that ‘if I make a mess, I have to clean it up.’
As you navigate the tricky waters of disciplining a preschooler, keep in mind that disciplining your child will provide a good foundation for them to grow into a patient and respectful friend and child.
