Teaching Your Preschooler to be a Team Player

Teaching Your Preschooler to be a Team Player

Learning to be a team player is not only an important lesson for team sports, it is also necessary to be a good team player at home and at school.  Your child will discover valuable lessons while viewing their family and friends as a team.

Explain to your child how the family functions as a team, and that each member must play their role in order for your home or family to be successful.  One parent makes the meals and makes sure everyone is fed, another member cleans the dishes or takes out the trash. Ask your child to imagine what would happen if someone wasn’t there?  Take the opportunity to discuss chores or tasks that can be assigned to your preschooler.

Encourage your child to work together with their siblings and friends.  How can they come up with a solution to their problem? Your son’s friend took his favorite toy away.  What can they do so that they both get to play with the toy? Learning to take turns is important to learning how to interact with their peers.

Practice being a team player at home.  Play board games where each member must wait their turn to play.  Make up games where your preschooler must wait their turn.

Engage in activities that require everyone to pitch in in order to succeed.  Your preschooler can hold the dustpan while you sweep the crumbs. When putting together a new gadget or piece of equipment, let your child help with deciphering the directions and finding the correct pieces.

Celebrate when your child helps the outcome of the task.  Remind them that you would not have been able to accomplish it without his help!  Your child will learn how important it is for everyone to pitch in and do their part!
