The holidays are a perfect time to begin new family traditions. Preschoolers love the bright colors, twinkling lights, and magic of the season. Traditions will help your family, and your preschooler, begin to create memories. Your child will be able to recall back to these fun moments and activities. You can help them remember these moments by talking about your experience together. Many families continue traditions passed down from their extended families, but if you don’t have very many traditions with your family, here are a few new traditions to start:
Decorate the Christmas tree
Whether you put your decorations up early or wait until after Thanksgiving, let your preschooler help with putting out the decorations. Turn on your favorite holiday movie while you put the decorations out. Then remember to tell your preschooler about where you picked up a particular ornament or who made your stockings. Make sure to pass down these stories to your child. (And don’t worry, just fix the tree after they head to bed!)
Watch your favorite holiday movie
Set your DVR to record or watch it through your favorite streaming service. Pick a night to watch your favorite movie with your family—A Charlie Brown Christmas, The Santa Clause, The Polar Express are all great movies to introduce to your preschooler. Make popcorn or other favorite Holiday snacks to eat while you watch with your family!
Bake cookies
Get your preschoolers in the kitchen. Show them the cookie recipe and help them mix up your favorite batch of Christmas cookies! Let them help with their own set of spoons and measuring cups.
When you are creating new traditions in your family, start small. Add one or two traditions to your families’ list of activities. Some activities may fall flat and you won’t want to do them again next year, or you may realize you LOVE one activity and that becomes the one special tradition every year!
