The time has come to send your preschooler back to school. It can be a difficult transition after a fun summer together, but getting back into the swing of things is important to your child’s early development. Here are some tips and tricks to make the back to school rush a little easier for you and your preschooler.
Manage Anxiety
Going back to school is stressful for kids of all ages, so it’s important to anticipate and address anxiety in preschoolers. Talk with your child about experiences they anticipate having at preschool and reflect on what it felt like to go to school last year. Always present new experiences with a peppy, positive tone. Also, be sure to keep an eye on your own anxiety about sending your kid back to preschool. If you’re nervous about school starting, your child will also be nervous.
Get Back on Schedule
With summer being some of the longest days of the year, it’s easy for a kid to get used to running around outside until dark each night. Ease the transition into early morning school by adjusting bedtime slightly every night. Consider starting their bedtime 10 minutes earlier each night and waking them up 10 minutes earlier every morning.
Start Boosting Confidence
In the final weeks before school starts, begin spending more one-on-one time with your child every day. Nothing sends a young student back to school happier than feeling fulfilled during the summer. Help their summer go out with a bang by planning to attend a fun, kid-friendly event in your area. Finally, on the night before school starts, allow your preschooler to pick out their own weather- and school-appropriate outfit for the first day. It will make them feel confident, creative and ready to face whatever preschool has to offer.
