We show our children that we love them every day, but Valentine’s Day deserves an extra dose of love! How perfect that it falls on the weekend this year! There are so many ways you can make it special for your preschooler and others in the community.
Family Activities
Whether it’s doing something one-on-one or including the whole family, small children love to do things with their parents. Make memories together by spending time together. You could make some heart shaped pancakes for breakfast, or create a unique Valentine’s Day themed t-shirt to wear. Cut out some heart shaped clues and have a treasure hunt (with all the cards, candy, and goodies as the prize, of course)! Use some of the hearts to write things you love about your family.
Reading together is not only fun, it is a great way to build attention span and vocabulary in young children. Happy Valentine’s Day, Curious George and The Berenstain Bears’ Funny Valentine are two of many great options for reading together on Valentine’s Day.
Community Activities
Not only do you want to teach your kids to love their family, you also want to teach them to show love to their community. Even with social distancing rules in place, there are ways you can reach out to others. Call a nursing home and ask if you can drop off some candy or cards. Buy some treats to drop off at the local fire or police station. Leave a card for your postal worker or favorite librarian. There may be a pediatric ward at the hospital that would love to pass out cards and goodies to the children there for you. Even putting on some gloves and picking up trash in the local park can show your child how to love the community.
Get your creative juices flowing and have fun spending time with your young ones at home and throughout the community this Valentine’s Day!
