Getting Ready for Back to School

Back to School

For a parent of a returning preschooler after a fun summer vacation, getting ready to go back to school can be a challenge. However, you shouldn’t let your prep work be something you save for the last minute. Here are some tips on how to take this transitional period one phase at a time.

A Few Weeks Out: Stock Up on Supplies

This may seem like a given, but stocking up on any and all required school supplies should happen a few weeks before returning to school. Don’t wait until the last minute to make a mad dash to the department store. Not only could prices hike in the final moments before classes begin, but the options may be limited as stock sells out.

The Week Before: Getting Your Child Comfortable

Even though this isn’t your child’s first time in preschool, it’s important for them to get reacquainted with their surroundings. Most preschools host open houses in the weeks leading up to classes, so be sure to walk the building a few times to make sure the environment is familiar before you leave them on the first day. This can also be a good confidence booster for your little one. Be sure to talk to your preschooler about their worries concerning returning to school. Don’t let them dread this important, positive change in their lives. Also, the week before is a great time to start using an early, school-appropriate bedtime.

The First Day Back: Time to Launch

It’s go time! Let your child choose their own weather- and school-appropriate outfit for the first day of preschool. It’s a great way to ease the tension while encouraging him or her to express themselves. Plan to spend a little more time at the preschool than usual. Allow for fifteen to thirty minutes of hangtime while you make sure the transition is comfortable. Finally: don’t linger. Drawing out your exit can make the separation anxiety more intense. Instead, leave with a positive and upbeat “goodbye,” ensuring your child that you’ll see them when preschool is over in just a few hours.
