First Time Trick-or-Treating with Preschoolers

First Time Trick-or-Treating with Preschoolers at Kids 'R' Kids New Territory/Telfair, preschool, daycare, childcare

Your favorite part of trick-or-treating might be face painting and funny costumes. Or, maybe you love to ferret out that last piece of chocolate in a bag full of candy corn, gummy candies, and lollipops. Nothing will compare, though, with the adventure of going trick-or-treating for the first time with your preschooler!

The tradition of trick-or-treating

The tradition of trick-or-treating can be traced back to medieval Halloween celebrations. By the late 1800s, children in Scotland and Ireland would go “guising” on Halloween, donning disguises and going house to house for cakes, fruit, and coins. Children “guising” around a North American neighborhood was first recorded by an Ontario newspaper in the early 1900s.

First time trick-or-treating

Even if you and your preschooler are trick-or-treating novices, you can take a few simple steps to ensure an evening of fun!

Map the Route

Map out your route ahead of time, whether that of a local Halloween block party, the streets around the grandparents’ house, or a festive downtown square. Knowing ahead of time where to park and if bathrooms are available can help to simplify the outing.

Choose the Costumes

Work on costumes together during the weeks leading up to Halloween, and once they are finished, look for opportunities to wear the costumes before the holiday arrives. This will spread out the fun and help to raise your preschooler’s comfort level as well!

Enjoy the Adventure

During trick-or-treating, stay connected with your little one by asking questions with open-ended processing questions, such as “What do you see in this yard?” and “What do you think that costume is?” The new sights and sounds can be overwhelming the first time. Talking about it helps to remind your little one that you are on an adventure together!

Go in a Group

If you are comfortable with the idea, invite your child’s friends and parents to come along. Pretty much everything is more fun with friends, but be sure you take into account your local restrictions on gatherings and social distancing. Play it safe by wearing a mask–it adds to the Halloween fun anyway!
