Seasons with Preschoolers

Seasons with Preschoolers at Kids 'R' Kids New Territory, preschool, daycare, childcare

Your preschooler may be noticing that the leaves in the trees are beginning to turn orange and yellow, or that the days have been turning cooler and cooler. These changes in the weather, and your little one’s observations or questions about them, provide a rich opportunity for you to talk with your preschooler about the seasons and to enjoy the changing weather together!

Seasons in the United States

Four temperate seasons are recognized in the United States, including winter, spring, summer, and fall. These seasons have unique weather and temperature ranges, as well as distinctive daylight qualities, that help to distinguish one season from another. For example, in the fall season, which begins with the September equinox between September 21 and 24 each year, temperatures decline, daylight shortens, and many areas receive more rain than during the summer months.

Strategies for exploring the seasons

Fun ways to explore the changes in the seasons with your preschooler include:

  • Explore Your Backyard: Track the observable seasonal changes in your yard, such as brightly colored leaves on the trees or cooler daytime temperatures. You may compare together how different the yard looks during the fall than during other seasons, such as in winter when the trees are bare or in spring when the flowers are in bloom. Then gather up a few leaves to take inside for a seasonal craft you can complete together!
  •  Visiting a Digital Library: Discover a few picture books about the seasons in a digital library, and take turns talking through the illustrations. You might find books that illustrate the brightly colored leaves or cold rainy days of the fall, or perhaps one that allows you to see the changes of the seasons throughout the year. Your little one will have many questions and observations to share as you read these books together!
