Nap Time Tips for Your Preschooler

Nap time is an important part of your preschooler’s day. It is essential to ensure your child is getting the rest their developing brain needs during naps. Here are some nap time tips to help you and your preschooler have a successful and restful nap time.

Establish a consistent nap time routine

Our bodies recognize and respond to routine. Your child’s body does too! You and your preschooler can go through the same routine each day before naps; this will help them recognize when it’s time for sleep! Parts of this routine can include changing into pajamas, brushing teeth, reading a story, singing a song, and getting tucked in.

Create the right environment

Make sure the environment your child is napping in is comfortable and relaxing. This could include dimming the lights, playing soothing music, or using a white noise machine! Some parents like to use a humidifier, or even a special light to signal to their preschooler that it is nap time.

Let them participate

Allow your preschooler to have a say in their nap time routine. Let them pick out their own pajamas or select a book to read before bed. This will help them take ownership of their own routine and get excited about nap time! Preschoolers love the feeling of independence, so even the smallest choice can empower your child and make it easier for the two of you to work together when it comes to nap time.

Nap time can be a challenge for parents and preschoolers alike. With the right strategies and environment, your preschooler can look forward to naps and transition into a peaceful sleep. Establishing a consistent nap time routine, finding the right environment, letting them participate, limiting food and drinks, and being flexible are all great ways to help your preschooler get the rest and relaxation they need.
