Teaching Preschoolers Empathy

Teaching preschoolers empathy is essential for their development, both socially and emotionally. Without it, children will have difficulty forming meaningful relationships and communicating effectively. Therefore, it’s important to give your preschooler time and attention to help them learn this critical skill. Here are a few things to keep in mind when teaching preschoolers empathy: 

Model Empathy 

Children emulate their parents so take the time to demonstrate empathy for those around you. Whether it’s giving an elderly lady a helping hand carrying groceries or being sympathetic towards a friend who’s going through a hard time, showing your little one how you practice empathy will help them understand its importance. 

Allow Time For Reflection 

When your child has hurt or wronged somebody or something, provide them with a period of intentional reflection by taking a few moments to talk about their behavior and how it may have made others feel. By allowing them some time to process their actions, they can gain a deeper understanding of why empathy is important.

Quiz Time 

Rather than lecturing your preschooler about empathy, encourage them to ask questions and think about different scenarios. For example, you could ask them what would happen if someone played with their toys without asking first or if someone said something unkind about a family member. This will help them start to think about how their behavior affects others as well as how it might make them feel if someone acted the same way towards them.
