Give Your Preschooler a Sugar-Free Valentine

Give Your Preschooler a Sugar-Free Valentine at Kids 'R' Kids Missouri City, preschool, daycare, childcare

Does it feel like all you have done is eat sugary foods since last October? You may be thinking about adjusting your approach to Valentine’s Day since it has become a celebration of sugar and chocolate. At its core, this day is a celebration of love and friendship, so focusing on those ideas can help you make this holiday special for you and your preschooler even without sugar. Here are three ways to give your preschooler a sugar-free valentine this year:

Eat foods sweetened with fruit.

  • Get food treats that are made from fruit or sweetened with fruit even if you are needing food items for your preschooler to take to school but still want to avoid sugar.
  • Use this free printable to make some Cuties (or clementines) look more festive.
  • Bake your own muffins or sugar-free treat with your preschooler. Just because you are not giving sugar does not mean you cannot make a chocolate treat like this dessert pizza or these peanut butter cups (does use some Stevia).

Spend quality time together.

  • Decorate your house with streamers and hearts.
  • Read some Valentine’s Day themed books or watch some movies with a love theme like Gnomeo and Juliet, Trolls, or Tangled
  • Do a fun Valentine’s Day craft together. Look at your local craft store or superstore for inexpensive crafts that are simple enough for preschoolers.
  • Play a game or plan an activity. Heart Hopscotch with paper hearts or sidewalk chalk, a dance party with love songs, or Cupid’s Arrow Toss are all great ways to celebrate through movement.
  • Make a Fizzy Heart “Love Potion” with Alka Seltzer or baking soda and vinegar. Add a little food coloring, and you have an exciting Valentine’s Day themed STEM activity.

Provide non-food treats.

  • Purchase non-food treats your preschooler and their friends will enjoy such as stickers, whistles, finger puppets, balloons, bubbles, glow sticks, or other small toys.
  • Use play-doh or slime for a sensory treat at home.

Valentine’s Day can be a fun holiday for both preschoolers and parents, but it does not have to revolve around food, especially the sugary kind.
