Back to School Preschool Routines

Back to School Preschool Routines at Kids 'R' Kids Missouri City, preschool, daycare, childcare

The lazy days of summer are almost over. Maybe you are feeling anxious because your preschooler does not have a regular bedtime, and you cannot even begin to think about what it will look like to get ready and out the door so early in the morning. It is nice to have a break in the summer when you toss routines to the side, but it is time to get back to it! The first day of school should not be the first early morning wake up.

Start Early

It is best to start your school routine two or three weeks before school actually starts. Get out your calendar, and mark it down; otherwise, it will probably sneak up on you. It may be difficult for them to go to bed so early (especially if the sun is still out) and get up earlier than normal. However, beginning your new routine a few weeks before will help them be better adjusted on the first day of school.

Spark Discussions

Begin reading books with your child and talking about school and what to expect. Every school is different, but circle time, listening to stories, participating in learning centers, and coloring are all common experiences. If your child has never visited the preschool, see if you can set up a time for them to visit. Even if they have attended the preschool before, they may have a new teacher or be in a different classroom.

Support Independence

No one expects a three- or four-year-old to be completely independent. If they are not used to cleaning up after meals, choosing their clothes for the day, or getting dressed independently, now is the time to start doing those things.

Set yourself up for success! Prepare meals, fill backpacks, and choose clothes the night before. Then establish a good bedtime routine. Mornings are often the hardest, so get in the habit of doing as much as you can the night before. Wake your child up at the time they will need to wake for school. Practice your morning routine for weeks before the first day. Good luck!
