Setting New Year’s Resolutions With Preschoolers

Setting New Year’s Resolutions With Preschoolers at Kids 'R' Kids Missouri City, preschool, daycare, childcare

With a new year comes a fresh start and a million New Year’s resolutions all around the world. Have a fresh start with the whole family by teaching your preschooler about what a resolution is and how we can do our best to make progress all year.

Make It Fun

The first step to really getting your little ones involved and staying with their resolutions is to make it fun. Get some interesting poster board, markers, and stickers and make a New Year’s Resolution poster to hang in the house for all to see. Enjoy the time decorating and writing your whole family’s resolutions out. You can come up with any size resolution—from taking healthier snacks to school to deciding to read a new book together every week.

Incentivize

Everyone tries more or sticks with their resolutions longer than they usually would when there’s a reward program. For every week you complete your resolutions, take the family out for ice cream or a movie. Don’t be afraid to customize the incentives to work for your family or to adjust as the months go by to keep things fresh and exciting.

Don’t Get Discouraged

Nobody is perfect. Lots of people quit halfway through February because of a mess up which leads to feelings of guilt or failure. Don’t strive for perfection, but for progress. Children are especially likely to respond emotionally to any feelings of failure, so don’t punish them for not perfectly reaching their goals. Talk it out using encouraging and positive language.

Be Accountable

Honesty is the best policy when it comes to New Year’s resolutions. Your children will follow your lead of trustworthiness if they see you admitting to your mistakes and taking them in stride. Only go through with your reward system if everyone has met their goals or made progress. Discuss starting fresh the next week and looking forward to the future.

New Year’s resolutions are about so much more than losing weight or learning something new—it’s about working together as a family to encourage one another and grow. Teaching your preschooler at an early age that growth never stops and that family can help each other in their tasks not only instills confidence, but will form a bond of integrity and trust that will go much longer than just one year’s time.
