There may be nothing so important for the health of your family as a good and effective bedtime routine. Not only does it help your preschooler get the sleep that is so important for their development and success at school, but it also helps the parents out as well. A good schedule can be a lifesaver for any parent, and the time after the kids go to bed may be one of your only peaceful moments all day. Whatever your story is, a good bedtime routine is worth fighting for, and so here are some tips and encouragements on how to turn bedtime for your preschooler into a well-oiled machine.
Let Them Pull Their Weight
Don’t be afraid to let you preschooler actually take responsibility for themselves a little. Set some standards for every night. After dinner, expect them to brush their teeth, and get into their pajamas, or even to pick out a shirt to wear the next day. By giving them a little responsibility, you are making sure that they are invested but also that they don’t feel like you are forcing them into bed. By making small achievable goals, you are boosting their own sense of responsibility while also guaranteeing everyone gets into a good schedule.
Allow for Some Free Time
Once your preschooler has done their “chores,” make sure to allow some fun, as long as it is still helping them settle down. If everything after dinner is strict and boring, most likely they are going to give you some resistance on going to bed. But, if they have some reward for getting ready for bed, they are way more likely to do it happily and without driving you crazy. You know your kid best, if they have a board game they like to play, let them set it up. If they want to play with their dolls before bed, or just read a book with you, whatever makes them happy is likely to make you happy as well. A little fun can go a long way.
Don’t Be Aloof
Being dismissive or super demanding that your preschooler gets in bed is probably going to achieve the exact opposite result. The last thing you want is your child running around hyper and frustrating you after a long day; no one wants to go to bed on a sore note. The easiest way to avoid this is just to be involved in the process. If they aren’t good at brushing their teeth, brush your teeth at the same time. If they need help picking out a shirt, offer some candid but tasteful fashion advice. Ultimately by being involved, you are going to help the whole process go a lot smoother. This may not be for everyone, but probably the most surefire measure for a successful bedtime routine is to just sit down with your preschooler and read to them. They will learn to treasure that time and it can turn into a lot of fun for the whole family!
