Practicing Gratitude with your Preschooler

Thanksgiving

As we get closer to Thanksgiving and the whole winter holiday season, start thinking about ways to talk to your preschooler about gratitude and helping others, especially since little ones may already be thinking about writing their lists to Santa! Here are some great ways to get your preschool-age kids to think about gratitude and thankfulness.

Gratitude Garland

Spend a chilly day indoors preparing a simple craft with your preschooler. Using autumnal colors, cut out leaf-shaped pieces of construction paper. Each day of the month, have your preschooler write something on a leaf that they are thankful for. Hang each leaf on a length of yarn or string with clothespins so that they have a daily reminder of all they’re thankful for.

Declutter and Donate

November is a great time to declutter those bedrooms and playrooms. Have a conversation with your preschooler about families and children who may have less, and encourage your child to choose toys they don’t play with often anymore. Go with your children to a donation center and let your child make the donation with you.

Notes of Gratitude

Ask your preschooler about people who help them! Encourage them to think about people who help in your community, too. Ask your preschooler if they’d like to write a note to say thanks to a favorite teacher, pastor, friend, or police/fire station for all they do in their lives. Hand deliver the notes with your child and make someone’s day!

Lead by Example

We often think of saying thanks to those outside our home, but practice saying thank you to everyone in your family. If your preschooler helps you with a chore, or your partner opens a door for you, say “thank you!” to them and see how adding gratitude to your home life changes everything!
