Teaching Preschoolers About Labor Day

It’s another holiday where we celebrate with barbecues and get-togethers, and it marks the end of a great summer! However you choose to celebrate this day of rest, help your preschooler learn about Labor Day this year!

What is Labor Day?

Labor Day is celebrated the first Monday of September and is the day we celebrate men and women who work every day in the USA and their contributions to our society. Help your child pick out people who work in these jobs: construction workers, police men and women, dentists and doctors. Discuss their daily responsibilities and how they make a difference in the community!

Crafts

Pick out photos from newspapers and magazines of people who work hard every day! Help your preschooler build a career board and find out what your child wants to be when he grows up! Watch videos of the work these hard workers do each day.

Pick a project to paint with your preschooler to practice using tools and following directions. If you are particularly ambitious, find a room in your house that could use a spruce up and have your child help prep the area.

Take your preschooler to work

Take your preschooler to work to let them see what you do every day! Talk to them about what you do at work, introduce her to the people you work with, and the other companies you interact with who help you do your job.

Activities

Build a dress up station and play dress up for Labor Day! Suggest careers for your child to dress up as and pretend to do the work. Include tools for particular jobs, like hammers and measuring tapes, computer keyboards, or stethoscopes and dress up as each worker to act out their job.

Put your kids to work at home! Take advantage of the long weekend and pick out projects at home your preschooler can help with. Preparing the garden, or organizing a closet—let them help with the hard work at home!
