For preschoolers, the holiday season often means presents, treats, and fun. But it’s also a chance to introduce the joy of giving instead of just receiving. A kindness countdown offers a daily opportunity for little ones to experience the magic of helping others.
Start the Countdown
Create a kindness countdown by filling a small basket or jar with slips of paper—one for each day leading up to a holiday. Each slip can include a doable and meaningful action:
- Tell a teacher “thank you.” Encourage your preschooler to think of something specific they appreciate, like a fun activity or a kind word. Practicing gratitude helps children recognize the efforts of others and builds strong relationships.
- Leave a happy note for a sibling. It can be as simple as a drawing or a smiley face with a heart. This sweet surprise teaches children that small gestures can make someone feel loved and noticed.
- Help set the table for dinner. Show your child how to place napkins, utensils, or cups to give them a sense of responsibility. It’s also a great chance to talk about teamwork and how everyone contributes to family life.
- Donate a can of food to a pantry. Let your child help choose the item and explain how it can help another family. Acts like this show preschoolers how even small efforts can make a big difference in someone’s day.
Let your preschooler pull one each morning. Keep tasks short and sweet—they’ll feel proud completing them on their own!
Keep the Momentum Going
Display your kindness accomplishments! Tape each used slip to a window or wall and watch the joy grow. Preschoolers will love looking back and seeing all the good they’ve done throughout the month. Bonus: it helps them understand that everyday kindness adds up.
