It is true—some children seem to be better coordinated than others. Thankfully, there are ample ways and opportunities to help your preschooler in the area of hand-eye coordination. Here are eight fun and practical ways to boost your preschooler’s personal hand-eye coordination.
- Roll a ball back and forth on a hardwood floor. Change things up and play with different size balls. If you really want variety, look around your house for other fun items to push back and forth. (If you have unopened diaper packages, these push back and forth nicely across the floor, for example.)
- Transition to playing catch. A bigger ball is best to start with. The big, bouncy plastic balls are beneficial to use.
- Have beanbag fun. You can do a variety of things with bean bags. Not only can you do the above ideas with beanbags, but you can also have fun putting them on an elbow or shoulder while you walk across the room.
- String beads or uncooked penne noodles. You can also have your child put beads or noodles on a straw.
- Play with balloons together. You and your child can practice hitting them in the air while trying to keep them from touching the ground. Your child can also run and kick a balloon and then run and throw a balloon. Variety keeps the activity going longer.
- Allow chances for finger painting or painting with a brush. Freestyle painting is fun, but you can also have your preschooler mimic/copy what you do. Then, switch turns.
- Use tweezers to pick up and sort pom-poms.
- Practice bouncing a big ball off the wall and take turns catching it.
The key is making it fun. Incorporate play in some way. This lessens frustration, and your child will not even know you are working to improve necessary skills along the way. Get out the camera and enjoy making memories along the way.
