Set up Your Calendar for Success as Your Preschooler Goes Back to School

Set up Your Calendar for Success as Your Preschooler Goes Back to School at Kids 'R' Kids Medlock Bridge, preschool, daycare, childcare

Back to school season is underway, and with that comes a lot of busyness and full calendars. Your calendar can be a tool to help you transition from lazy summer days to structured school ones. Here are a few ways to set up your calendar for success as your preschooler heads into fall.

Get Organized

Getting everything done can feel overwhelming to parents and preschoolers! Place a physical calendar in a general area of the house where everyone in the family can see it. In addition, parents can create a simple checklist of items that need to be done before and after school for their preschoolers. Pinterest is filled with free and editable ones that you can download and print.

Create Routines

Adults and preschoolers alike must find the balance between work, free time, and physical activity. Create routines that let your preschooler decompress after school but also guarantee they get all of their tasks accomplished. You will want to consider a mix of screen time, play time, after school activities, and homework time. Be careful not to over-schedule your week. Sometimes you may have to say no to things in order to keep a consistent routine.

Plan Ahead

Check the calendar in the evening for the next day’s happenings, and then help your child get everything ready the night before, including what clothes they will wear, packing a lunch, and putting their backpack together. This will help the mornings go smoother and keep you from forgetting something.

Another tip for parents is to plan out your week before it starts! Plan what meals you are going to prepare, grocery shop, and possibly even do some meal prep on the weekends. The same is true for activities or events. Do not wait until the last minute to get the snack for class or the soccer game. Do what you can on the weekends to lighten your load during the week.

Be Flexible

Despite your best planning, things will happen that derail your schedule. Adapt and keep going the best that you can. Review your calendar and possibly make adjustments to your schedule to be better prepared in the future. Generally, preschoolers respond well to a routine. So, keep using a calendar in order to set yourself up for success during the school year.
