Preschoolers can often be quite unorganized. Their bedrooms can all too easily reveal this truth, creating an ongoing and dreaded chore for parents. With a bit of time invested on the front end, your preschooler’s room can not only become more organized but even stay organized with minimal daily effort.
Consistently Purge
To begin with, periodically remove trash and ensure you are keeping on top of toys, books, and clothing that fit your preschooler. Once the room has been prepared, the real organization can begin. For organization to work, it needs to make sense and be easy to maintain. Everything needs a place and be in its place. An easy way to keep your preschooler’s room organized is through a rotation of toys. Divide the toys into a few groups and leave only one group accessible at a time. After a month or two, put those toys away and bring out a different group. Less toys accessible means less toys to clean up, and as a bonus, it keeps toys feeling new.
Storage Options
Ensure you have sufficient storage options. Not every option is expensive. Painted coffee cans, cheese ball containers, crates, over the door shoe organizers, bins (especially for under the bed), baskets, buckets, and rain gutter bookshelves are all options! When making your selections, be sure to choose options that work with your preschooler’s abilities and skills. You’ll want to keep the items your preschooler uses often within his reach, while things that require your supervision should be placed where only you can access them.
Labels are an excellent way to help your preschooler be able to participate in maintaining the organization. If the labels include both pictures and words, your preschooler will not only see what belongs inside but he will also be able to start associating the word with the toy.
Enjoy It
Once each item in your preschooler’s room has a clearly identified place, you’ll be amazed how much time is saved during your daily clean up. You’ll find it is also much easier for your preschooler to put away his things on his own. With a bit of well-planned work up front, the dreaded chore of cleaning his room won’t be so dreaded any more.
