St. Patrick’s Day can be a fun holiday, no matter your age. For preschoolers, the day is often filled with green things, shamrocks, and colorful rainbows. Your child may not understand the religious origins of the holiday, but with several fun activities, they can begin to appreciate some of the reasons people celebrate on March 17th.
Learn about Irish Culture
One way to better understand the holiday is to immerse yourselves in Irish culture. A fun family activity is to learn some Irish dancing. Watch a video of an Irish dance performance. (YouTube is a great place to find one.) Try out the jig, hornpipe, or reel by watching an online video or attending a virtual class. Another way to learn about the Irish is by checking out books or movies about Ireland and the history of St. Patrick’s Day from your local library. If you are feeling crafty, try painting or drawing an Irish flag or four-leaf clover. For dinner, eat a traditional Irish meal like corn beef and cabbage.
Make a Leprechaun Trap
On the night before St. Patrick’s Day, create a trap to catch a leprechaun. Your preschooler may not know that leprechauns do not like to be seen. These traps can be as simple or elaborate as you like. Use a shoebox, laundry basket, or any other box to create the trap. Cover the box with paper or decorate with stickers and drawings. The leprechaun will only come at night and must be enticed with gold coins, Lucky Charms cereal, or whatever creative ideas you come up with. In the morning, your preschooler should wake to see that the leprechaun has taken the treat they left and given them a small gift or treat instead.
Enjoy all the Green
St. Patrick’s Day is all about the color green! Let your child choose a green colored outfit for the day. Whether you add green food coloring to pancake batter or milk, or eat celery, broccoli, and grapes, enjoy some green foods throughout the day. Take a walk around the neighborhood or at a park and look for green things in nature as the signs of spring are emerging. Finish the day by playing with green playdough.
No matter how you choose to celebrate, may the luck of the Irish be with you!
