Problem Solving Techniques to Teach Your Preschooler

Problem Solving Techniques to Teach Your Preschooler at Kids 'R' Kids Medlock Bridge, preschool, daycare, childcare

Being able to solve problems is not a skill that someone suddenly develops when he becomes an adult. The majority of learning actually happens at a young age, and then continues to progress over time. Like learning to play an instrument or to speak a second language, it is much easier when started at an early age. Helping preschoolers develop problem solving skills will help them throughout their lives.

Learn through Emotions

Help your preschooler identify what emotions they are feeling when they encounter a problem. Are they angry? Sad? Overwhelmed? Then talk through how to process that emotion properly. There are no bad emotions, but there are bad responses.

Learn through Play

Role playing, watching a show aimed at preschoolers, or reading a book can all be helpful for your child. Children learn best through play. Build a fort using available material or build something with Lego blocks. Give your preschooler a challenge that involves some imagination and trial and error. In this way, problem solving becomes its own reward.

Learn through Thinking

Obviously, your preschooler will not be able to handle an elaborate problem-solving method, but you can begin to teach them to look for solutions. Help them recognize the pros and cons of certain actions. Ask them “What would happen if…?” questions. Help them develop a plan by giving them something to try. Preschoolers are more concrete, hands-on learners, but it is beneficial for them to start practicing the thought processes of problem solving. It can be as simple as identifying the problem and breaking it into manageable chunks. As you talk through and brainstorm ideas, parents, make sure you are listening! Your child is more likely to implement a plan that they came up with.

Learn through Failure

You have probably heard the term “Helicopter Parent.” As easy as it can be for parents to just give their preschooler an answer or solve the problem for them, do not do it! Give your preschooler some space to struggle, make mistakes, or even fail. It is the only way they will learn how to move forward.
