Preschoolers are at an age where their minds and bodies are each growing rapidly. Additionally, they are more open to mastering new things throughout this phase. So, how can you take advantage of that? What are some necessary abilities that your toddler can start to master?
Preschoolers need to learn how to socialize with other people. Modeling correct conduct is often the best form of teaching. Children need to learn how to wait their turn, share, and cooperate with others. Saying “please,” “thank you,” “you’re welcome,” and “excuse me” at suitable times indicates respect for others. Other ways to exhibit respect are through listening and following directions.
Sometimes physical skills can be a lot more fun to teach and learn, however they can also be frustrating if it simply is not coming easily to your toddler. Let your preschooler learn at his own pace rather than pushing the skills too quickly. Some physical skills to practice are climbing stairs using alternate feet, leaping off low steps or objects, starting to pump when swinging, balancing on one foot, and pedaling a trike or bike.
Young children are well known for coming up with their very own unique styles! No matter what look they are going for, there are certain personal grooming habits they can form. Preschoolers should be trying to brush their own hair, wash their hands with soap and water, doing most of their potty business unassisted, brush their teeth with a little help, and get themselves dressed (other than some pesky buttons and belts and those sorts of things).
Kids normally love being asked to assist with “grown up” chores. From the time children are small, they can and should be taught to make a contribution to the household. They can do things such as make their bed, put toys away, assist with setting or clearing the table, picking up crumbs after meals, and helping with the laundry. Outdoors, they can help rake the yard or carry lightweight items to the curb for trash pickup.
No matter what skill you are trying to develop in your preschooler, remember to be patient and praise them for their progress. You are their number one cheerleader!
